For more than 30 years, Mario in Nintendo's classic video game series has been voiced by actor Charles Martinet. He will now become what Nintendo is calling a "Mario Ambassador." (SOUNDBITE OF BLUE GAME CLASSICS' "SUPER MARIO BROS THEME") Good morning. I'm Michel Martin.
Martinet created the voices of both Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario video game series, portraying them from 1994 to 2023. He also voiced other characters in the series such as Wario, Waluigi, and the baby equivalents of Mario and Luigi, prior to stepping down as voice actor to become an official brand ambassador for the series.
His off-the-cuff performance impressed Mario creator Miyamoto, and Martinet first voiced Mario in a 1994 CD-ROM game called “Mario Teaches Typing.” But most Mario fans met Martinet in 1996 with the release of the instant-classic “Super Mario 64” (IGN called it the “greatest video game to date” at the time of its release).
As revealed in October 2023, Kevin Afghani is the voice of Mario and Luigi as of 2023, replacing Charles Martinet. The LA-based voice actor's first appearance in these roles can be found in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and it's fair to assume (though not definite) that he will voice those characters in new Mario games for the foreseeable future.
